Perfectionism

One of the things that often prevents people from making decisions and moving forward is perfectionism. Perfectionism is a deadly disease. It gets you nowhere. It paralyzes you. It is “paralysis by analysis.” It is a need to make everything perfect. You need to map out every single step of the way before you do something. On top of that, when you tackle projects, you believe that you have to get everything done perfectly. But, it is impossible. The idea of making something perfect is overwhelming, even impossible. Because of this sense of being overwhelmed, you might procrastinate on even getting started.

When you have a project, you don’t have to complete every single task in order to say that you have finally achieved something. If you are a results-oriented person, you tend to measure your accomplishment by the final product. However, to have something done does not necessarily mean to have the final product finished. In a project and in its process, there can be many parts that get done along the way. If you break it down and list each measureable step to get to the big, final product, each of those steps is also an accomplishment. Even when you want to get to the top of a pyramid, you have to climb it one step at a time. You may be able to jump or leap two or three steps at a time, but you cannot make it to the top with just one leap. So, even in a big project there are measureable, divisible steps to scale, in other words addressing the smaller issues separately in the process of getting to the top.

There are also no perfections. When was the last time you completed a truly perfect task? If you look back at what you consider to be your best job to date, you would certainly admit that it was still not perfect. It could still have been improved on. When something is called perfect, it suggests that there is no room for improvement, nowhere else to go. The reality is that there is no perfection in any task, but rather a progression that requires continual work, revision, and improvement. It is like starting out with a beta version of 1.0 and you keep improving until you get version 5.10 and eventually version 10.2, and so on and so forth.

Human beings are creations of hope, goals, and progress. It is in all of us. Just as bees create hives and ants create colonies, humans create futures. It is a continuing expansion into what lies before us. Imagine if we were to say that something “is perfect.” There would be no room for progress or expansion. We need to set goals, otherwise we will stagnate. It is crucial to realize that everything is a process, a state that you need to enjoy in the present.

Imagine if you were to go on a hike and your destination is a waterfall at the end of the hike. If your only
